A woman has described being fat-shamed after she went to an all-you-can-eat buffet and the restaurant tried to charge her double accusing her of ‘eating too much’.
TikTok user Poppy, from South Wales, known on the platform as @poppypaints, revealed what happened in a video that has garnered 120,000 views.
The body positive advocate made the clip as part of a trend which sees people sharing times they have been fat-shamed.
Poppy explains that she went out to eat, and after the meal, the server brought the bill, and she noticed she had been charged twice.
When she inquired over the price, she was told it was because she had eaten ‘too much’.
Speaking in the clip, which more than 8,000 people have liked, Poppy said: ‘I once went to an-all-you-can-eat buffet.
‘And when the bill came I noticed they charged me twice. I questioned it and said why? And he said I ate too much.’
In the comments, the TikTok user revealed that she had refused to pay double for the meal, writing that she ‘argued and only paid the one flat rate’.
People took to the comments to share their own experiences of being fat shamed, which ranged from people making mean comments about them, to being stared at while doing PE classes at school.
One wrote: ‘I had a holiday booked to go to Istanbul and my mum’s bestfriend said to me “Oh to get weightloss surgery?” and when I said no, he goes “Why not?”.’
Another added: ‘Went to use the loo on a plane and bloke said if I was the standard of woman on holiday they should have stayed home. Another said ‘”Two fat ladies 88′”.’
A third said: ‘I visited a paid entry beach in Turkey and they wanted to charge me double as I would take up too much sand.’
And a fourth commentator revealed: ‘I had a similar thing at a hotel once – it was a buffet breakfast and a lady was telling me off. It was a normal amount of food!’
A further TikTok user opened up, saying: ‘Had an old lady tell me at work that my dress was very pretty “but dresses werent made for big girls”.’
